CAST
Author’s note: Writers are free to write in parts to create a custom-sized cast for each production.
DARBIE- (F) Darbie is the protagonist of the doll story and an eternal optimist. She is sweet-natured, perceptive, complex, and intelligent and cares deeply about her family, friends, fashion, and Ben. Even though she is only a teen she has succeeded at almost every career choice.
BEN- (M) Has a heart of gold but things only go his way because of good luck; not good planning. He is naive but thinks he has everything all figured out. He adores Darbie, his ‘good ideas’, and brushing his hair or looking in the mirror.
FASHIONISTA BEN- (M) Fashion is the language he speaks. He is dramatic, over the top, and funny. A likable character that provides comic relief with campy humor.
STACIE- (F) A smart and sassy realist. She addresses the audience directly showcasing her dry humor but rarely shows her sarcasm to her sisters. She stays sharp and level-headed except when it comes to Ben.
SKIPPY- (F) A likable character that goes with the flow but has the typical emotions of a pre-teen/teenager. She feels confident one minute but freaks out the next.
CHELSEA 1, CHELSEA 2, CHELSEA 3- (F) Triplets, fun, rambunctious, and adorable. Often hold hands, sometimes fight, play games and they love a good prank.
ROCHELLE- (F) The doll antagonist of the story, life is never dull when Rochelle walks into a room. She is in a self-inflicted and never-ending battle with Darbie but never seems to win. She pronounces words with her own accent and has a flair for the dramatics. Full of hilarious comebacks and put-downs. Has a twin named Ryan.
RYAN- (M/F)Rochelle’s twin brother or sister and Rochelle’s sidekick that follows whatever Rochelle tells them to do.
REAGAN- (M/F) Friend of Rochelle and Ryan. Caddy and petty.
TADD- (M) Little brother of Ben that was discontinued and cast aside. Looks up to his big brother.
KELLY- (F) Disheveled and discontinued little sister.
Z- (M/F) Professional photographer to the stars and the doll family.
MIDGE- (F) Naive, old fashioned, stuck in the 1950-1960ssnorts when laughs. A loveable character brings a fresh and often funny point of view. Wants to have a boyfriend but has been stuck with only Kelly and Tadd for many years.
ALEXIA THE COMPUTER- (M/F) Sounds like a computer and adds interest to the real-life mean girls scenes.
FLEXIBLE NUMBER OF PARTS AS FOLLOWS
STORYTELLERS/FANGIRLS/FANBOYS- (M/F) Flexible lines and number of characters: SLOANE, PARKER, BLAKE, LAKELYN, JOCELYN, DARREN, EVERLY, KENNA, GIGI. These storytellers are glue that holds this story together. The words they speak are poetic and thoughtful. Characters that give a story-like feel to the play.
Author’s note: All storyteller lines can be customized to fit the production and the number of actors. Theater director maintains control as to how lines/parts can be distributed as the storyteller parts are meant to be flexible. Director is welcome to rename any storytellers.
PATTI ANN, AXEL RAE, LILY LANE- (M/F) Doll Newscasters who break the news of the possible discontinuation of the Darbie Dolls franchise. Provide theatrical and lively commentary on their predicament and the future.
MADISON- (F) Queen bee of the third-grade mean girls of Sparkle City. She is spoiled, self-absorbed, and too grown up. Worried more about the future than being a kid. Top Darbie Doll and social media influencer.
IVY- (F) The nicest of the mean girls, a loyal friend even when she is treated poorly by the other girls. Desperately trying to fit in. Her favorite hobby is face masks and making social media videos.
PIPER- (F) Mean girl that acts like a teenager.
EMERALD- (F) Sell, Sell, Sell CEO, and Madison’s mom, Type A overachiever who forgets to put her daughter’s happiness and childhood first.
CASH- (F) CEO’s Husband and Madison’s dad, a softie.
MACY or MATT- (M/F) Young child at a party that teaches Madison to be a kid again. Sweet and playful.
